The first time that I met Tom was 2002 in Edinburgh, in Moray House. He was very kind with a 'Spanglish' teacher who was asking for help to research in knowledge representation and education. The last time that we met was in CMC2008. I feel that his energy to work (in spite of illness) and his clever mind to engage education and artificial intelligence will be living in my mind and my memory. He is part of my happy feelings and my research work in Moray House and will be for ever.

I must thank Tom for Conception. I want to convey to Tom's friends the pain of an Italian teachers' work group, who have written a Google Knol on Conception, now dedicated to its intelligence: http://knol.google.com/k/marco-guastavigna/conception-nella-didattica/6mt4qkarqmlp/30#

I was really sad to hear of Tom's death today. I hadn't spoken to him for many years as our paths had separated a long time ago. It is, however, with great satisfaction that I remember working with him on the CSYS team. I loved the way his mind worked and I felt he had a really great understanding on what might make a good, robust and sound course in computing. He will be sadly missed. Tom, you were one in a million!

I was so sorry to hear the news of Tom's death. Only the other week I related a story to my trainees - I run a PGCE in secondary ICT at Bath Spa University - about Tom's comment at PEG in Edinburgh in 1993. I fancied a pint in a pub other than Moray House's bar and caught a bus to Carpenters Mains. You had to put the fare in a box and the driver asked for 60p. I put in a pound and then looked for my change. "There's no change", said the driver, "you have to put in the correct amount". I related this story back in the bar at Moray House. Tom said "I can tell ye're nay a true Scot. A true Scot would have stayed on the bus until he got his pound's worth. He'd have then got off the bus and walked back!"

Articulate, precise, intellectual, iconoclastic, funny, inspiring. It was a privilege to have known and been taught by Tom. I am truly saddened by this news, it's the end of an era.

Tom was unique. He challenged orthodoxy, asked searching questions about policy and practice, and was always ready to enter into constructive dialogue. I have enjoyed being his pupil, his colleague and his friend.

I was fortunate enough to have Tom as my multidisciplinary tutor this year. All of us in the class appreciated the extra special effort he put into every session, always pushing us to think more deeply and never allowing us to coast. I was incredibly sad to hear about his death and offer sincere condolences to his family.

I met Tom at the first international conference on concept mapping in Pamplona, Spain, 2004. He attended my session, which demonstrated multiple concept maps created by college students to integrate their semesters' learning in various biology subjects. He commented on the variety of creative expression exhibited by these students and I feel appreciated the unique meaningfulness that each student created from the same content. I am grateful for his insights, for his technical capabilities, and for his appreciation of learning as an exercise of each individual's mind.
